An Adventure in Science, Nemesis Theory
Richard Muller (1984)

PDF
"..But Alvarez and his team refused to ignore it. Most likely, someone was making a silly mistake, but it had to be checked out. Alvarez had once missed making the discovery of artificial nuclear fission because he had failed to follow up on a seemingly unimportant observation. And many of his most important discoveries, such as the radioactivity of tritium, had come from his pursuit of such stray observations. (Pg. 4)

The iridium-to-clay ratio proved difficult to explain away. The shark sensed blood. When there is something difficult to understand, it means your paradigm may be wrong. (Pg. 4)

...The moment that Piet made that suggestion is the closest I ever came to the proverbial "Eureka!" I could see immediately that most of the problems of my solar companion theory would vanish with this seemingly minor change from asteroids to comets. An hour later we had checked the numbers. The theory worked. It took us a week to make sure that the theory violated no other established facts of physics, geology or astronomy. We had to make sure that it was plausible for a companion star to the sun to have eluded detection by astronomers. We found that relatively few stars have had their distance measured, but that of the stars already catalogued, there were at least several thousand candidates, any one of which could be orbiting the sun. We mailed off our paper to the British magazine Nature for publication." (Pg. 7)

Terrestrial catastrophism: Nemesis or galaxy?

"
CLUBE and Napier have claimed recently that the hypothesis of an unseen solar companion triggering periodic mass extinctions can be eliminated. We disagree with their analysis...

...What we do object to is the direct misquotation of our work, and the misleading statements which indirectly misrepresent our work. Indeed, the hypothesis of a solar companion star, generally referred to as Nemesis, remains as viable as when it was first proposed." (From article)

The Wolfsberg Group (2012)

PDF
This chapter illustrates an early example of corporate Collective Action, the Wolfsberg Group, and charts its development from its inception, in 1999, up to the present day. The Wolfsberg Group is an association of eleven banks that took its name from the Château Wolfsberg where the banks held their first meetings and where they continue to hold their annual forum.

The phrase “Collective Action” suggests a positive or proactive approach by participants to an initiative with a common goal that, by implication, is acknowledged by the participants from the outset. By now, the notion of Collective Action through consensus is a core principle, but it took time and effort to build up the necessary trust amongst banks that were otherwise competitors.

Time to Abolish Electoral College
Brookings Institute (2020)

PDF
For years when I taught campaigns and elections at Brown University, I defended the Electoral College as an important part of American democracy. I said the founders created the institution to make sure that large states did not dominate small ones in presidential elections, that power between Congress and state legislatures was balanced, and that there would be checks and balances in the constitutional system. In recent years, though, I have changed my view and concluded it is time to get rid of the Electoral College. In this paper, I explain the history of the Electoral College, why it no longer is a constructive force in American politics, and why it is time to move to the direct popular election of presidents. Several developments have led me to alter my opinion on this institution: income inequality, geographic disparities, and how discrepancies between the popular vote and Electoral College are likely to become more commonplace given economic and geographic inequities. The remainder of this essay outlines why it is crucial to abolish the Electoral College.
